Nicholas Lyons

Accredited Specialist in Personal Injury Law

Nick moved from Melbourne, where he grew up, to Ballarat in 1991.  He completed his law and arts degrees at Monash University, graduating in 1989 before undertaking his articles in 1990 with Melbourne firm Read Kelly.  He joined Ronald Saines & Co., as it was then known, in 1991, as a first year Solicitor shortly after his admission to practice.

Nick joined the partnership in 1996, and when the then Senior Partner, Ron Saines, left in June, 2002 to take up an appointment as a Magistrate, Nick took over as Senior Partner, a position he still holds in the firm.

Nick has practised extensively in all types of personal injury litigation for the last 15 years, and exclusively in that area for more than 10 years, after cutting he teeth on criminal and general civil litigation, disputes and employment law in his early years.  His areas of particular interest are Workers Compensation (WorkCover) and motor accidents (TAC) claims and litigation.

In 2005 Nick sat examinations set by the Law Institute of Victoria and became a qualified accredited specialist in personal injury law.

Nick is also on the Victorian Branch Committee of the Australian Lawyers Alliance, a national organisation focusing on maintaining and furthering the rights and interests of injured people and the community generally. He was elected the public liability representative of the committee in 2007 and he currently sits on the Tort Law Reform Working Group, a committee with the Law Institute of Victoria, which is involved in a campaign to try and wind back some of the unfair laws introduced by the State Government in 2003, which seriously limit peoples rights to just compensation.

Nick has always had a close affiliation with the Ballarat Trades Hall where we are still proud to have an office and assists, as does our firm generally, injured workers and union members with advice and legal services as required.  He supports the Labour movement through Trades Hall functions, events, fundraisers and political campaigns whenever the occasion arises, as does our firm.

Nick hates to see injustice, particularly when there is a large imbalance of power between injured people and large insurers, corporate entities or government bodies.  He is determined to use his skills and considerable experience to obtain the best results for injured people and their families.

Nick has two children in primary school in Ballarat. Nick is proud to call Ballarat his home now and keeps a keen eye on local activities and events.  He is a passionate golfer, off single figures, and a member of two local golf clubs.  He is also an avid follower of the Hawthorn Football Club.
